"Ghost Forest"

POEM: GHOST FOREST

(by Fleur Thesmar)

It's not only the sleet.

The earth is soaked by memories...

A mist of words stick to my skin.

I miss you, seeing you everywhere.

Yet, heavy drops shine over the buds

Up there in the tree

Like moons in the twilight.

IMAGES

Framed Watercolors, 22x30 inches

Ghost Forest is a series composed of a poem and ten abstract watercolors (22x30 inches, 26x34 when framed). They explore the landscape as an inheritance and a place for a new life. The poem says that we can't see a familiar landscape without thinking about the people missing, but also how the love they had for the place is inherited and memorized.

Starting in a meditative state, she paints freely on the canvas , relying on the words from the poetry. Part memory, part traces, part pigments, the watercolors look like inner landscapes metabolized by the artist. They evoke a spring forest in the South West of France starting to germinate.

Using environmental friendly materials in earthy colors, the series culminate in blooming, soft pink blooms. The images evoke the constant loop between the flow of images we are exposed to, and our memories and emotions. This abstract work intends to initiate a dialogue with the viewer, seeking to leave them a place for their own emotions. How do we communicate through images, and what does our consciousness interact with them?

Thesmar's previous work on the golden ratio informs the loose compositional structure of the paintings.

The painted artworks are watercolors on paper, framed in professional frames with anti-UV, anti-glare glass.

Biography

Fleur Thesmar (b. 1972, Paris, France) graduated from Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau, France, and holds a Master in Sciences from Imperial College, London, UK. She is an interdisciplinary artist whose work encompasses watercolor, weaving, tapestry, video, and photography, with a focus on evoking the mystique and subtle strangeness of nature. After an early start in the arts, Thesmar returned to her creative path following a transformative shift from her former role as a lobbyist in France. Her move to the U.S. in 2015 and immersion in the expansive Californian landscapes sparked a renewed commitment to expressing nature’s shapes and rhythms in her work.

Thesmar’s process is rooted in environmental awareness. An allergy to preservatives in conventional paints led her to embrace natural, sustainable materials, reflecting her sensitivity to nature and forming a dialogue that invites viewers to pause, explore, and imagine. Her art offers a space for contemplation and discovery, encouraging a personal connection to the environment.

Thesmar’s works are exhibited in the USA and in France, and are held in private collections worldwide, including in the USA, Canada, Europe, and Asia. Her practice continues to evolve, guided by a commitment to artistic exploration, environmental consciousness, and a nuanced dialogue between the organic and the mystical.

Explore a diverse portfolio of work that moves between abstraction and observation. Each series examines layering, transparency, and the interplay of control and chance — qualities inherent to watercolor and multiple exposure photography alike.

From the monumental accumulations in Removal (2019) to the recent poem-guided abstract watercolors, the pieces reflect an ongoing investigation into presence, memory, and the unpredictable nature of materials.
