Stills

My process brings together several techniques, video, photo and watercolors, to create a dialogue between human observation, image making, and nature. What is the motion that creates art, between the eyes, the hand and the heart?

My process is very iterative, beginning with paintings from life, recording photos and videos, painting from the videos, and using the paintings in new videos; I love to use several distinct palettes, to interrogate the color space and the process of translation through synthetic tones, versus natural and earth colors; I also make many digital sketches and collage videos, with geometric shapes echoing the cristalline nature of life.

For instance here, each watercolor in the movie was actually painted from a movie with digital Collage animation. The particular movement made by the camera around the bouquet of flowers is balanced by the screen elements of cut mountain, cloud, peony and leaves.

Explore a diverse portfolio of work that moves between abstraction and observation. Each series examines layering, transparency, and the interplay of control and chance — qualities inherent to watercolor and multiple exposure photography alike.

From the monumental accumulations in Removal (2019) to the recent poem-guided abstract watercolors, the pieces reflect an ongoing investigation into presence, memory, and the unpredictable nature of materials.
