In the world of contemporary art, the process is often as meaningful as the finished piece. As I reflect on my recent painting of an orange dahlia, from a photo I made during the soft, dim light of a summer storm, I’m reminded how each step is part of a larger, emotional journey. This painting, with its transitions from blush pinks to fiery oranges and ruby reds, emerged from a place of calm and introspection, mirroring the soothing rhythm of the rain outside as I took the picture.
My process always begins with color—a source of joy and inspiration. In this piece, I chose warm, vibrant tones to express the movement of the heart, capturing the light and shadow interplay that adds depth and emotion to the scene. The delicate, slow brushstrokes reflect a deliberate and mindful approach. I am leaning into slow creation, using the art as a meditative practice, where the evolution of each work reveals an intimate dialogue between the self and the world.
I allowed the vibrations of the shadows to guide my work, echoing the way nature informs the emotional narrative of the painting. The storm outside became a metaphor for the creative energy within, influencing the flow of colors and their vibrations on the paper.
